Introducing ACDIS Canada!

Updated: May 6, 2024

Welcome!

Meet Monique Rasmussen, Sonia Shiels, and Jamie Podmorow, founders of ACDIS Canada. This ACDIS leadership team is comprised of healthcare professionals who recognized the need for a community that addresses resource, peer support, and training needs for Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists and other healthcare professionals interested in this field.

What is CDI?

Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) programs began nearly 40 years ago in response to the necessity of assuring that medical record documentation in hospitals accurately reflects the patient's journey through the healthcare system as it translates into clinically coded data. In the United States, CDI (also called Clinical Documentation Improvement or Clinical Documentation Integrity) is an established system integrated into most hospitals and healthcare institutions, primarily led by a team of CDI specialists and physician advisors.

Although Clinical Documentation Improvement is an emerging field of healthcare information management in Canada, CDI plays an integral role in patient care by ensuring that the services provided to the patient in their hospital encounter are accurately reflected in their electronic health record.

What is the difference between ACDIS and ACDIS Canada?

ACDIS is the American Primary Association and ACDIS Canada is the Canadian chapter of ACDIS. ACDIS content is based on practices and procedures regulated in the United States. Although the robust supporting learning resources on the ACDIS website and in ACDISPro are a reflection of universal healthcare, the coding, billing and compliance information is based on the US healthcare system. Always refer to Canadian resources when it pertains to coding, patient quality and safety metrics, Canadian national health indicators, and Canadian compliance.

Who can be a member of ACDIS Canada?

Whether you are a Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist, Health Information Management Specialist, or another healthcare professional, you are eligible to join the chapter.

I am a Registration Clerk at the hospital, but I am interested in CDI. Do I qualify to be a member?

Yes. This chapter has been created to share information. If you are interested in CDI, you are welcome to join and access the resources, participate in community forums, and attend meetings.

I am a student taking a Health Information Management Program. Can I join?

Absolutely. You will find resources and be able to participate in healthcare community forums.

At ACDIS Canada, we are dedicated to creating accessible information for healthcare professionals that will serve the healthcare community, improve clinical documentation, and enhance overall patient care in Canada.
